How to Care For Invisalign
Properly caring for your Invisalign aligners is critical for staying on track with treatment. Follow these essential care tips from Dr. Behbood:
Keep Aligners In 22 Hours Per Day
Aligners must be worn for 20 to 22 hours daily to effectively shift your teeth into the proper position. Only remove Invisalign trays for brushing your teeth and eating. Reinsert your aligner as soon as possible after you eat or drink. Invisalign patients wearing aligners for less than 20 hours daily risks impeding progress.
Rinse After Eating and Drinking
After eating, drinking anything besides water, or taking medication, remove clear aligners and rinse thoroughly before reinserting. Leave them out until you can brush and floss if possible. If away from home, swish water in your mouth and run clear aligners under water to remove food debris before reinserting.
Clean Aligners Twice Daily
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and water with a small amount of antibacterial dish soap to gently brush aligners inside and out. Avoid toothpaste, which can create micro-scratches in the plastic that encourage bacteria growth. After scrubbing, rinse thoroughly with water only. Repeat cleaning at night and use Invisalign cleaning crystals as necessary.
Don’t Heat or Cool Aligners
Avoid exposing aligners to high heat or cold to prevent damage, warping, or cracks. Don’t drink hot coffee, tea, or soup with aligners in place, and don’t clean or store aligners in hot water.
Keep a Spare Set
In case an aligner breaks, cracks, or is lost, always have at least one spare on hand. Contact Dr. Behbood right away if you need to move up to your backup pair.
